Maryborough Park 2009

Day 1 - Travel Day
A quite uneventful drive up to Maryborough Park, we cruised up the Bruce Highway with no major traffic delays. The horses travelled comfortably but enjoyed a break just outside of Gympie. Arrived at Maryborough Park after taking the scenic route through town mid afternoon. The equestrian complex is huge complete with stables, an indoor arena, covered washbays and a BMX track. So far there are only a few families camped out in the massive camping area. There are plenty of toilets and the showers are still providing hot water, apparently, but for how long after all the dressage competitors finishing arriving tomorrow night? There are some Zone 2 riders already here, some camped in floats with awnings, chairs and bonfires. Some are lucky enough to be in five star campervans. We have fed the horses their dinner, rugged them up warmly even though the weather is a touch warmer than home, had our dinner and we are almost ready for bed even though its early. Tomorrow we are just going to relax and prepare the horses for the dressage but take our time and catch up with some pony club friends from all over Queensland.

Day 2- Preparation Day AM
We woke up this morning to a spooky fog covering the grounds. By the time we finished our hot cooked breakfast (spoilt yes) the fog had cleared to a beautiful blue sky and a very nice day. Its not too hot or too cold, a mild breeze and the smell of sawdust in the air. We thought there that more people arrived would have arrived by the time we got up but the day is still young. The horses have finished breakfast and it is time to get them out, get the rugs off and have a ride in the sunshine. Last minute preparations under saddle to be made. This is it, crunch time. If that medium trot isnt ready now its too late. Competition starts tomorrow but we are feeling confident we are ready and hope our best is good enough. The rest of the zone 2 riders should arrive soon. We have a team meeting around 5pm tonight and will find out who our manager is and what procedure we need to follow tomorrow in the dressage, where gear check will be and a pep talk. There are eleven rings set up across the grounds. Elementary and Novice riders are in the indoor arena which looks very exciting. Time to get the horses ready, washed and plaited. It will be a big day tomorrow. Hopefully there will be lots of photos in the gallery soon.

PM
The afternoon wrapped up with washing and plaiting after a very warm even hot day. The weather has been beautiful however the locals keep saying tomorrow will be cold. The evening has gotten a little chilly but we are sitting around a fire which is keeping us warm. We went off to the welcome dinner and enjoyed the desert and were all quite relieved the Hodgson made it without the car stopping. Poor Mr Hodgson did look quite rattled but with a good sleep he should recover. It looks like the next two days of dressage is going to be hectic. The eleven rings are spread out over the grounds and some parents are concerned about calling tests in one ring and then getting to the next ring to call. It looks like it will be a long run :). We had our team meeting with Nat, she is our fearless leader and brave zone manager. Nat filled us in on what is expected tomorrow, where to gear check for each ring, how many riders in the warm up and how not to stop to present to the judges to save time as there are heaps of tests to get through before it gets dark tomorrow night. We are looking forward to the competition and the mounted presentation on Saturday with all the zones from Queensland doing a march past with the zone flags. It is a sight and those of us who haven't seen it before so we are looking forward to it. Now for a goodnight sleep. There are some photos in the gallery. There will be more soon!

International Society for Equitation Science Annual Conference
Sunday 12 to Tuesday 14 July 2009

Ethical Equitation – a sustainable approach
Straight from the horse’s mouth
International experts in horse behaviour, training and welfare will converge in Sydney for the 5th Equitation Science Annual Conference to be held at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Veterinary Science and Centennial Parkland Equestrian Centre from 12 – 14 July.

The theme this year is Ethical Equitation- a sustainable approach, and will consider how horse sport and horse welfare can go hand in hand.

What is the effect of different training regimes on the physical fitness of the equine athlete? Can the mere presence of a human help to calm a nervous horse? How does rider position affect stride length during canter? And how is the temperament of a future sport horse accurately assessed? The world’s leading experts in horse behaviour and physiology have the answers to these questions and many more. And the good news is that the Equitation Science Conference is not just for the equine egg heads of the world, but open to everyone involved in training and caring for horses including vets, coaches and competitors.

The three-day conference will feature a lively combination of keynote and academic presentations alongside practical demonstrations from some of Australia’s leading horse professionals including;

·         Top international showjumper and coach Colleen Brook
·         Horse trainer for stage and screen Steve Jeffries - whose breathtaking gallop onto the centre stage with his Stock Horse signalled the start of Sydney’s Olympic Games
·         ParaOlympian and clicker training expert Georgia Bruce
·         The Australian Equine Behaviour Centre’s Warwick McLean
·         Australia’s leading dressage rider Brett Parberry

These internationally acclaimed horsepeople will be working with learning theorists and new technology such as rein tension meters and gait analysis software to unpick the mechanisms common to all clear animal training.

The three keynote presenters are:
·         Dr Bidda Jones, Chief Scientist at RSPCA Australia
·         Emeritus Professor Bob Boakes, one of the world’s leading experts on learning in non-human animals
·         Professor Leo Jeffcott , longstanding veterinarian to the Australian Olympic Eventing team
